What is TMJ?
The TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, is the joint that connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the rest of your head. If this joint becomes stressed, misaligned, or damaged, it can result in a condition referred to as TMJ disorder, which is sometimes simply called TMD. TMJ disorder may be caused by a number of factors, such as stress, arthritis in the jaw joint, bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching), a misaligned bite, or trauma to the head, neck, or jaw. Patients who suffer from TMD commonly list the following among their symptoms:
- Jaw pain
- Clicking, grinding, or popping sounds in the jaw when opening and closing the mouth
- Difficult or painful speaking and chewing
- Inability to open the mouth wide
- A locked or stuck jaw
- Ear pain or ringing in the ears
- Pain in the face, head, neck, or shoulders
