What is a sealant?

A dental sealant is a simple yet effective preventive dental treatment we provide at Westchester Family Dentistry to keep your teeth healthy and free from decay. The sealant is a very thin coating of plastic or resin material that is painted onto the chewing surface of the molars and pre-molars (back teeth). Sealants are clear or tooth colored, so they will not affect the appearance of your smile. The dental sealant forms a smooth surface over the natural pits and grooves of the tooth surface, which makes it easier to keep your teeth clean through regular brushing. The sealant also blocks out bacteria, plaque, and food particles that can become stuck in these grooves and ridges and lead to tooth decay.

Do I need a sealant?

Drs. Stan and Amy Shih may suggest a dental sealant in Yonkers, New York, in order to protect your smile from tooth decay. We typically recommend sealants for children when their permanent molars come in, which is usually between six and twelve years of age. In some cases, our dentists may also recommend sealants for adult patients.
